Producer Samuel Bronston literally re-created ancient Rome in order to present its fall, politically, socially and economically in this Ultra Panavision 70MM production that came in at an estimated budget of $19M in 1960s money. Filmed primarily at the Bronston Studios in Spain, this international production was First Class all the way with magnificent cinematography, a lush orchestral score by Dmitri Tiomkin and Mann’s solid direction. The production team even replicated the Roman Forum down to the smallest detail. The artwork on this Polish poster is quite modern and depicts the armored head of a fallen centurion very much in the style of a contemporary fresco. Art is by Wiktor Gorka. Very Fine Plus.

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968) 20120

This is an original roadshow MGM/CINERAMA Six Sheet Poster (81×81) for the Stanley Kubrick sci-fi masterpiece, 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968) starring Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, and William Sylvester. Based on the Arthur C. Clarke story called “The Sentinel,” the film is essentially a story about evolution. Sometime in the distant past, “something” nudged evolution by placing a monolith on earth that imparts the knowledge of tool use to early humanoids. Evolution then enables mankind to reach the moon, where yet another monolith is “deliberately buried” and emits a signal aimed at Jupiter. Then, six astronauts (four in hibernation) and a very sophisticated computer embark on a journey to Jupiter in hopes of finding the source. The pace is slow with incredible attention to detail, which very realistically envisions the future of technology. The special effects that were pioneered for this film are still breathtaking by today’s standards. Kurick’s use of a classical music score creates a haunting atmosphere of awe, mystery, and intrigue. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Director for Kubrick and Best Screenplay for Clarke and Kubrick. Kubrick did win the Oscar for Best Special Visual Effects. This original six sheet poster with artwork by Robert “Bob” McCall is in very fine to near mint condition. Unbacked.

Original 20th Century-Fox Roadshow SIx Sheet Poster (81×81) for the Joseph L. Mankiewicz historical epic, CLEOPATRA (1963) starring Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and Rex Harrison. Originally this film was supposed to be two three hour movies—the first dealing with Caesar and Cleopatra and the second with Antony and Cleopatra. But Fox, reeling from the exorbitant cost overruns associated with this budgetary debacle, decided to release one four hour movie instead. Elizabeth Taylor’s original contract stipulated that she was to be paid $1 million. But after a lengthy $50 million lawsuit brought by the studio against Burton and Taylor and then a countersuit by Taylor, the studio finally settled with the actress for $7 million. The six sheet and the 24 sheet are arguably the best U.S. posters on this title. The Howard Terpning art was used worldwide for the CLEOPATRA advertising campaign. This original Todd-AO marked Roadshow six sheet poster is in very fine plus condition.
