In this ninth film in the popular, long-running Chan series, the Chinese government calls Chan to Shanghai to investigate a murder involving an opium ring, whose leaders kidnap Charlie and attempt to have him killed. This action-packed, complex mystery is the only film in the series set in China. Although Chan films are often accused of being racist, the Chan character was just about the only positive Asian character in Hollywood films of the 1930s, and the series was tremendously popular with the Asian-American audiences of the era.
