BEN-HUR (1959) 8529

Original MGM One Sheet Poster (27×41). Very Fine.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
This is an original MGM One Sheet Poster (81x81) for the William Wyler historical epic, BEN-HUR (1959)—starring Charlton Heston, Jack Hawkins, Stephen Boyd, and Hugh Griffith. Considered by many critics to be one of the greatest achievements in cinematic history, Wyler not only had to direct literally “a cast of thousands,” but also was able to pull from his main actors the performances of their lives. Everything about this production was epic. 50,000 people were used to make the film on 300 sets covering more than 340 acres. The famous chariot race scene was shot in an 18-acre arena that took 40,000 tons of sand to make the track. The stands were packed with 8,000 extras, and it took over three months to shoot the entire scene. MGM, which nearly went bankrupt making the picture, spent over $12.5 million, but grossed over $40 million, on the project. The film won eleven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor to Heston, Best Supporting Actor to Griffith, and Best Director to Wyler. Of all the epics made by the major studios, BEN-HUR alone makes a statement of faith without pandering to sex and violence, and as such, represents one of the few really big films to approach religion in a respectful way. This original one sheet poster is in very fine condition.

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (1956) 8036

Original Paramount Pictures Style B One Sheet Poster (27×41). Linen-backed. Fine plus condition.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
This is an original Paramount Pictures Style B One Sheet Poster (27x41) for the Cecil B. DeMille biblical epic, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (1956)—starring Charlton Heston, Yul Brynner, Anne Baxter, and Edward G. Robinson. This is the story of Moses, born to slavery but raised as a son of Pharaoh, who learns of his Hebrew heritage and his divine mission as the deliverer of his people. This was DeMille’s second time to direct this story, as his first 1923 version was a silent film. Heston was chosen for the part because of his striking physical resemblance to Michelangelo’s sculpture of Moses. Brynner was chosen because of his magnificent performance in THE KING AND I (1956). Besides the outstanding acting from the major members of the cast, the film boasted a cast of literally thousands, marvelous special effects, beautifully detailed costumes, and lavish sets. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture but only won the much deserved Oscar for Best Special Effects. This original style B one sheet poster is linen-backed and in fine plus condition; the portraits for this poster were taken by Canadian photographer Estrellita Karsh.

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (1956) 6924

Original Mexican One Sheet Poster (27×36). Very fine condition.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
This is an original Mexican One Sheet Poster (27x36) for the 1956 Cecil B. DeMille Biblical epic, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS—starring Charlton Heston, Yul Brynner, and Anne Baxter. This was DeMille’s last film, which he had previously made before in a silent version in 1923. This new production was truly “larger-than-life” with enormous crowd scenes, lavish spectacles, and amazing special effects for the time. Many critics consider this to be Heston’s greatest role, playing the Hebrew prophet as a humble man with a great inner strength. In the famous Exodus scene, there were over 12,000 people and 15,000 animals stretched over three miles. Costing an unheard of $13 million to make, the film grossed over $80 million and enjoyed several re-releases. The musical score for The Ten Commandments is one of the best by the wonderful Elmer Bernstein. This original Mexican one sheet is in very fine condition.

WILL PENNY (1968) 6285

Original British Quad Poster (30×40).  Near mint condition.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
This is an original British Quad Poster (30x40) for the Tom Gries western romance, WILL PENNY (1968)—starring Charlton Heston, Joan Hackett, Donald Pleasence, Lee Majors, and Bruce Dern. Heston gives his most sincere and sensitive performance as the aging cowboy Penny who falls in love with Hackett after he allows her and her son to share a cabin with him until the spring. All of the performances are quite good, especially Pleaseance and Dern who are frighteningly convincing as a homicidal religious zealot and his psychopathic son. With better artwork that the U.S. one sheet poster, this original British quad poster is in near mint condition.

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (1956) 8650

Original Yugoslavian 1960s Re-release Poster (20×28).  Very good condition with some small tears.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
This is an original Yugoslavian 1960s Re-release Poster (20x28) for the Cecil B. This was DeMille’s second time to direct this story, but his first as a retelling directly of the Bible story; the 1923 version was a silent film told partially in a contemporaneous setting. This 20x28 Yugoslavian poster is probably a re-release poster from the sixties. Modestly priced, the poster is in very good condition with some small tears. This art is significantly different from the 1956 posters, and shows Moses in two tableau from the film -- the parting of the red sea and the idolatry of the Children of Israel before the Golden Calf. Linen backing would help this small poster. Please see our post on Linen backing and Restoration.
