CLEOPATRA (1963)

Original 20th Century Fox Roadshow 3 Sheet Poster (41×81). Near Mint.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
Original 20th Century Fox Roadshow 3 Sheet Poster (41x81) for the Joseph L. Mankiewicz historical epic, CLEOPATRA (1963)—starring Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and Rex Harrison. Originally this film was supposed to be two three hour movies—the first dealing with Caesar and Cleopatra and the second with Antony and Cleopatra. But Fox, reeling from the exorbitant cost overruns associated with this budgetary debacle, decided to release one four hour movie instead. The result of this unfortunate decision is a spectacular film - spectacular in a way that digital effects cannot hope to match - with a less than satisfying narrative. Elizabeth Taylor’s original contract stipulated that she was to be paid $1 million. But after a lengthy $50 million lawsuit brought by the studio against Burton and Taylor and then a countersuit by Taylor, the studio finally settled with the actress for $7 million. This original three sheet poster is in near mint condition. It has been expertly linen backed and the Dutch censor stamp left visible. Art by Howard Terpning.

SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER (1959) 2187

Original Columbia Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41). Good.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
This is an original Columbia Pictures One Sheet Poster (27x41) for the Joseph L. Mankiewicz dramatic classic, SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER (1959)—starring Elizabeth Taylor, Katharine Hepburn, and Montgomery Clift. Based on a play by the very successful Broadway icon Tennessee Williams, the screenplay was skillfully adapted by Gore Vidal. Set in New Orleans in 1937, Hepburn plays a lady of means who is mourning the loss of her son. She wants to donate a million dollars to the hospital where Clift is a doctor if he will perform a lobotomy on her niece Taylor. The young woman has been traumatized by what she witnessed last summer. Tennessee Williams never forgave his own mother for letting his sister Rose have a lobotomy to “cure” her anxiety problems. The whole story turns on the character of the son Sebastian, who is never seen in the film. Supposedly, dead of a heart attack, the audience finally discovers that he was murdered by a group of youths because of his homosexuality. Both Taylor and Hepburn were nominated for Oscars. It was the eighth nomination for Hepburn and the third nomination for Taylor. This original one sheet poster is in good condition with some tears in the border areas. CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF (1958) 19413

Original MGM One Sheet Poster (27×41).  Folded.  Very fine condition.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
This is an original MGM One Sheet Poster (27x41) for the iconic American film CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF (1958) starring Paul Newman, Burl Ives, Jack Carson, Judith Anderson and, of course, Elizabeth Taylor in one of her greatest roles. Taylor plays the beautiful and sultry wife of the alcoholic and sexually ambivalent young football player Brick (Newman). Brick is the son of an autocratic Southern patriarch who is known in the play only as Big Daddy, played wonderfully by the great Burl Ives. Jack Carson, Judith Anderson and Madeleine Sherwood flesh out the cast, as they work through the stew of Tennessee Williams' tangle of desires and ambitions. One of the great American plays, whose influence on the American Theater cannot be overestimated, is transformed into a remarkable film by director Richard Brooks. Maggie the cat is shown on the poster where her appeal is most apparent - on the bed. The poster is folded slightly irregularly, but the condition is very fine.

BUTTERFIELD 8 (1960)

Original MGM Insert poster (14×36)  Very fine condition.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
Original MGM Insert Poster (27x41) for the Daniel Mann drama. BUTTERFIELD 8 –starring Elizabeth Taylor, Laurence Harvey, and Eddie Fisher. Taylor had just run off with Debbie Reynolds’ husband Eddie Fisher when MGM decided to cash in on the bad publicity and make Taylor take this role of bad-girl-from-hell as the final film in her contract to the studio. The film is adapted from John O'Hara's prohibition-era novel about a high class call-girl. But in this film, set contemporaneously, Elizabeth Taylor plays a hard-drinking, sexed-up, bed-hopping model, who gets her kicks from seducing and then dumping one man after another. Taylor always complained that the film was a total piece of trash. But her over-the-top performance was just what the role required and won her the first of her two Oscars for Best Actress. What is unfathomable is how anyone could be interested in cold-fish Laurence Harvey. When Taylor grinds her stilletto heels into Harvey's toes, we cheer. Elizabeth's best line in the film: "I'm not like anyone; I"m me." Truer words were never spoken. A rolled very nice copy of the insert.
