BEN-HUR (1959) 8529
Original MGM One Sheet Poster (27×41). Very Fine.
This is an original MGM One Sheet Poster (81x81) for the William Wyler historical epic, BEN-HUR (1959)—starring Charlton Heston, Jack Hawkins, Stephen Boyd, and Hugh Griffith. Considered by many critics to be one of the greatest achievements in cinematic history, Wyler not only had to direct literally “a cast of thousands,” but also was able to pull from his main actors the performances of their lives. Everything about this production was epic. 50,000 people were used to make the film on 300 sets covering more than 340 acres. The famous chariot race scene was shot in an 18-acre arena that took 40,000 tons of sand to make the track. The stands were packed with 8,000 extras, and it took over three months to shoot the entire scene. MGM, which nearly went bankrupt making the picture, spent over $12.5 million, but grossed over $40 million, on the project. The film won eleven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor to Heston, Best Supporting Actor to Griffith, and Best Director to Wyler. Of all the epics made by the major studios, BEN-HUR alone makes a statement of faith without pandering to sex and violence, and as such, represents one of the few really big films to approach religion in a respectful way. This original one sheet poster is in very fine condition.
CLEOPATRA (1963)
Original 20th Century Fox Roadshow 3 Sheet Poster (41×81). Near Mint.
Original 20th Century Fox Roadshow 3 Sheet Poster (41x81) for the Joseph L. Mankiewicz historical epic, CLEOPATRA (1963)—starring Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and Rex Harrison. Originally this film was supposed to be two three hour movies—the first dealing with Caesar and Cleopatra and the second with Antony and Cleopatra. But Fox, reeling from the exorbitant cost overruns associated with this budgetary debacle, decided to release one four hour movie instead. The result of this unfortunate decision is a spectacular film - spectacular in a way that digital effects cannot hope to match - with a less than satisfying narrative. Elizabeth Taylor’s original contract stipulated that she was to be paid $1 million. But after a lengthy $50 million lawsuit brought by the studio against Burton and Taylor and then a countersuit by Taylor, the studio finally settled with the actress for $7 million. This original three sheet poster is in near mint condition. It has been expertly linen backed and the Dutch censor stamp left visible. Art by Howard Terpning.
THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (1938) 19271
Original Warner Bros. One Sheet Poster (27×41). Very Good.
This is an original Warner Bros. One Sheet Poster (27x41) for the Michael Curtiz and William Keighley adventure epic, THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (1938)—starring Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland. Fresh from his overnight success in CAPTAIN BLOOD (1935), Flynn was the archetypal Robin Hood; indeed, the young and athletic actor insisted on doing most of his own stunts, including perilous leaps and the scaling of high walls. Flynn was surrounded with some of the best character actors of the day. This film was one of the first color productions, and the entire movie is bathed in astounding color. The lavish sets and the rich score by Erich Korngold also add greatly to the production quality of the film. Many critics still consider this one of the greatest adventure films ever produced, and THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD remains to this day one of the most popular films of all time. This original one sheet poster is in very good condition. We are showing this poster unrestored. Please note the Dutch Censor stamp.
LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (1962) 13803
Original Columbia Pictures Roadshow Poster (40×60). Linen-backed. Very Fine.
This is an original Columbia Pictures 40x60 Roadshow Poster for the David Lean war epic, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA—starring Peter O’Toole, Alec Guiness, and Omar Sharif. This film is the unforgettable biography of the flamboyant and controversial British military officer and his conflicted loyalties. With a brilliant script by Robert Bolt, a stunning score by Maurice Jarre, and unbelievably beautiful cinematography by Freddie Young, this film is considered to be the greatest adventure-biography ever filmed. The sweeping desert vistas totally immerse the viewer, and the battle scenes are among the most realistic of the era. It was nominated for 10 Academy Awards and won seven—including Best Picture, Best Director for Lean, Best Music for Jarre, and Best Color Cinematography for Young. This original 40x60 Roadshow poster is linen-backed and in very fine condition. While all Roadshow LAWRENCE posters are coveted, the 40x60 with the Howard Terpning art is extremely rare.
BEN-HUR (1959) 4685
Original MGM Six Sheet Poster (81×81). Fine plus.
This is an original MGM Six Sheet Poster (81x81) for the William Wyler historical epic, BEN-HUR (1959)—starring Charlton Heston, Jack Hawkins, Stephen Boyd, and Hugh Griffith. The absolute apogee of the religious epic, Wyler not only had to direct literally “a cast of thousands,” but also was able to pull from his main actors the performances of their lives. Everything about this production was enormous - 50,000 people were used to make the film on 300 sets covering more than 340 acres. The famous chariot race scene was shot in an 18-acre arena that took 40,000 tons of sand to make the track. The stands were packed with 8,000 extras, and it took over three months to shoot the entire scene. MGM, which nearly went bankrupt making the picture, spent over $12.5 million, but grossed over $40 million on the project. The film won eleven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor to Heston, Best Supporting Actor to Griffith, and Best Director to Wyler. Interestingly enough, Gore Vidal worked as a script doctor on this film. This original six sheet poster is in fine plus condition. The six sheet poster is printed on four panels. The panels have been butted together for this photograph.
ALEXANDER THE GREAT (1956) 5648
Original United Artists British Quad Poster (30×40). Folded. Fine plus condition.
This is an original United Artists British Quad Poster (30x40) for the Robert Rossen historical epic, ALEXANDER THE GREAT (1956)—starring Richard Burton, Fredric March, and Claire Bloom. The film follows the life of the Macedonian king as he unites all the Greek states and leads them against the vast Persian Empire. Although many critics complained that Burton was too old to play Alexander, especially in his adolescent years—Burton gave a strong performance of the charismatic king. Originally folded, this British quad poster is in fine plus condition with only some water staining in the bottom border.
DOCTOR ZHIVAGO (1965) 7121
Original MGM 2-Record Set (12 inch 33 1/3 LP) of Interviews, Radio Spots, and World Premier Activities.
This is an original MGM 2-disc promotional LP (33 1/3 LP) of Interviews, Radio Spots, and World Premier Activities for the David Lean epic masterpiece, DOCTOR ZHIVAGO (1965)—starring Omar Sharif, Julie Christi, Geraldine Chaplin, Rod Steiger, and Tom Courtenay. The film, adapted from Boris Pasternak's famous novel, is an artful and seamless combination of the personal and political lives of the main characters through the period of World War I and the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia. The film was nominated for ten Academy Awards—including Best Picture, Best Director for Lean, and Best Supporting Actor for Courtenay. The film won five Oscars—including Best Color Cinematography to Freddie Young and Best Original Music to Maurice Jarre. This original 2-record set is in very fine condition. Please note that this is not a soundtrack album, but a publicity record intended for radio stations to publicize the film. Rare item.
GONE WITH THE WIND (1939) 12752
Original Selznick 1940 Six Sheet Poster (81×81). Stone lithograph. Linen-backed. Very fine condition.
This is an original Selznick 1940 “Limited Engagement” Six Sheet Poster for the Victor Fleming Civil War masterpiece, GONE WITH THE WIND (1939)—starring Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable, Olivia de Havilland, and Leslie Howard. Based on the epic novel by Margaret Mitchell, this film is certainly one of the greatest films ever made, bringing together a stellar list of talent in Hollywood at the time. Not only are all the performances outstanding, the scenery and costumes are sumptuous, the cinematography by Ernest Haller and Ray Rennahan (shot entirely in Technicolor) is glorious, and the music of Max Steiner is memorable. The film was nominated for 13 Academy Awards—including Best Picture, Best Actress to Leigh, Best Director to Fleming, and Best Cinematography. The poster for issued for the year 1940, and is considered original material. This is certainly the best poster depicting the burning of Atlanta. GONE WITH THE WIND was released in a few markets at the end of 1939, but the vast majority of its run began after January 1940. Some posters have erroneously been tagged as "roadshow" for GWTW. This is a misnomer. The film was never released as a roadshow attraction. Rather, Selznick rolled out a very slow release for the movie intended to build interest and positive word-of-mouth buzz over time. A more successful campaign for the release of the film could hardly have been accomplished. Adjusted for ticket price inflation, GONE WITH THE WIND has been (for decades) the highest grossing film ever made. This original stone lithograph six sheet poster is linen-backed and in very fine condition.
THE PRODIGAL (1955) 15626
Original MGM Six Sheet Poster (81×81). Near mint condition.
This is an original MGM Six Sheet Poster (81x81) for the Richard Thorpe Biblical epic, THE PRODIGAL (1955)—starring Lana Turner and Edmund Purdom. Tuner is cast as Samarra, the high priestess of Astate—the goddess of fertility and sexuality. This lightly-clad temptress incites Micah (Purdom), the model son of a Hebrew patriarch, to demand his share of the family fortune and go in pursuit of pagan women. Samarra further induces Micah to squander his money and betray his faith. Only after many trials and tribulations does Micah recover his senses and return home to a forgiving father. The film is a lesser light in the pantheon of epic films, but this poster is spectacular. This original six sheet poster is in near mint condition.
LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (1962) 15027
Original Columbia Pictures Roadshow Lobby Card (11×14). Very fine condition.
This is an original Columbia Pictures Roadshow Lobby Card (11x14) for the David Lean war epic, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA—starring Peter O’Toole, Alec Guiness, and Omar Sharif. This film is the unforgettable biography of the flamboyant and controversial British military officer and his conflicted loyalties. With a brilliant script by Robert Bolt, a stunning score by Maurice Jarre, and unbelievably beautiful cinematography by Freddie Young, this film is considered to be one of the greatest adventure-biographies ever filmed. The sweeping desert vistas totally immerse the viewer, and the battle scenes are some of the most elaborate ever filmed. It was nominated for 10 Academy Awards and won seven—including Best Picture, Best Director for Lean, Best Music for Jarre, and Best Color Cinematography for Young. This original roadshow lobby card is in very fine condition - a superb photograph of O'Toole in his most famous role.
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (1956) 6924
Original Mexican One Sheet Poster (27×36). Very fine condition.
This is an original Mexican One Sheet Poster (27x36) for the 1956 Cecil B. DeMille Biblical epic, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS—starring Charlton Heston, Yul Brynner, and Anne Baxter. This was DeMille’s last film, which he had previously made before in a silent version in 1923. This new production was truly “larger-than-life” with enormous crowd scenes, lavish spectacles, and amazing special effects for the time. Many critics consider this to be Heston’s greatest role, playing the Hebrew prophet as a humble man with a great inner strength. In the famous Exodus scene, there were over 12,000 people and 15,000 animals stretched over three miles. Costing an unheard of $13 million to make, the film grossed over $80 million and enjoyed several re-releases. The musical score for The Ten Commandments is one of the best by the wonderful Elmer Bernstein. This original Mexican one sheet is in very fine condition.
