This is an original RKO Insert Poster (14x36) for the Jacques Tourneur excellent film-noir, OUT OF THE PAST (1947)—starring Robert Mitchum, Jane Greer, Kirk Douglas, and Rhonda Fleming. Some critics consider this film to be the best film-noir ever. It certainly has a wonderful screenplay, incredible cinematography, expert direction, and flawless acting. It has all the noir elements—an innocent man (Mitchum) in over his head, a relentless bad guy (Douglas), and a totally amoral femme fatale (Greer). This was Kirk Douglas’s second film, and he and Mitchum both received good reviews for their parts. But the film really belongs to Greer, whose sheer scope of evil will leave you dumbfounded. This original insert poster was originally folded and is in very fine condition.

Talman, in one of best performances of his career, informs the other two that he intends to murder them when the ride is over. This is the only film-noir to be directed by a woman, and Lupino’s almost documentary style gives this story the necessary grit and intensity. This original one sheet poster is linen-backed and in very fine condition. Some touch-up at fold lines and fold intersections.

This film was popular with audiences not because of the story so much as the forceful performances by all the main actors and the excellent direction by Walsh. The most memorable moment in the film is the trial sequence in which Lupino disintegrates into hysterics on the witness stand. This original one sheet poster is linen-backed and in very fine condition.

Using the trappings of Freudian psychoanalysis, Lang weaves a mysterious tale about Celia (Bennett), a trust-fund baby, who must play detective to save her relationship -and ultimately her life - with a man who collects rooms where murders have occurred. Lang’s use of dream-like atmosphere, trance-like narration, complex sexuality, bleak cinematography, and haunting music—all create a most engrossing and stylish film noir. Powell only signed under the proviso that he could play a dramatic role first, so he was cast as detective Philip Marlowe in this stylish adaptation of the Raymond Chandler novel. The art of this original three sheet poster is the best on the title with a stunning shot of Trevor in a negligee and bold title graphics. The poster has been restored to correct pinholes in the corners, fold wear, small tears in the borders, and a chip out of the left border. So much so that director Laughton swore he would never direct another film—and he didn’t. Mitchum gives a stunning and frightening performance as a religious fanatic who marries and murders widows for their money, believing he was helping God rid the world of women who arouse men’s carnal instincts. This original six sheet poster is folded and unrestored. It still retains good color and overall a very presentable appearance. But when Udo is found not guilty, Bianco is sure he will come after him. This is Widmark’s first feature role as the psychopathic killer Udo, and his dark portrayal garnered him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
