GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES (1953) 14186

Original 20th Century Fox Six Sheet Poster (81×81). Linen-backed. Near mint condition.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
This is an original 20th Century Fox Six Sheet Poster (81x81) for the popular Howard Hawks musical comedy, GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES—starring Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe. This film was flashy, funny, warm, and opulent with Russell and Monroe performing great song and dance routines in sometimes lavish and outrageous costumes. Monroe’s legendary “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend” is more captivating than any of the numerous parodies and tributes made afterwards. Marilyn Monroe was never more adorable and innocent than her persona in this film. Russell also turns in a marvelously comic performance and manages to project a warm sense of sisterhood in her scenes with Monroe. Remember, POSTERS are a boy's best friend. And what boy, age six or sixty wouldn't want these two larger than life stars in their home theater. This original six sheet poster is linen-backed and in near mint condition.

THE PRINCE AND THE SHOWGIRL (1957) 14475

Original Warner Bros. Six Sheet Poster (81×81). Linen-backed. Very fine condition.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
This is an original Warner Bros. Six Sheet Poster (81x81) for the romantic comedy, THE PRINCE AND THE SHOWGIRL (1957)—based on a play by Terence Rattigan and starring Laurence Olivier and Marilyn Monroe. Marilyn’s famous “sex appeal” is on full display in this film as she tries to seduce Olivier. In the original play, Monroe’s part was English, not American, and was played by Vivien Leigh. Olivier, who also directed the film, wanted Leigh for the film part, but she was ill at the time. Monroe was available and very popular, so Oliver offered her the part. They did not get along at all during the filming. Olivier was understandably perturbed by Marilyn’s infamous “moodiness” and her total inability to arrive at the set on time. Still, the actress puts in a very credible and delightful performance and will be remembered and appreciated far more that Oliver’s stiff and snobby Grand Duke. This original six sheet poster is linen-backed and in very fine condition - one of the best examples of this poster we have seen.

DONT BOTHER TO KNOCK (1952) 14471

Original 20th Century Fox Six Sheet Poster (81×81). Linen-backed. Very fine.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
This is an original 20th Century Fox Six Sheet Poster (81x81) for the Roy Ward Baker dramatic thriller, DON’T BOTHER TO KNOCK (1952)—starring Richard Widmark, Marilyn Monroe, and Anne Bancroft (in her film debut). The film tells the story of airline pilot Jed Towers (Widmark), who at first actively pursues baby-sitter Nell (Monroe) but then gradually realizes she is crazy and dangerous. Part psychological drama and part thriller, the film remains one of Marilyn Monroe’s best dramatic performances. Widmark also gives an excellent performance in spite of having to portray a rather lame, superficial character with few redeeming features. This original six sheet poster is linen-backed and in very fine condition. Six sheets on this title are rare.

HOW TO BE VERY, VERY POPULAR (1955) 6162

Original 20th Century fox One Sheet Poster (27×41).  Folded.  Very fine condition, with only minor fold separations.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
This is an original 20th Century Fox One Sheet Poster (27x41) for the Nunnally Johnson comedy, HOW TO BE VERY, VERY POPULAR (1955)—starring Betty Grablel, Sheree North, and Robert Cummings. This is the film that Marilyn Monroe refused to do for Fox. Instead, she moved to New York to study with Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio. Unfortunately, Sheree North was quickly put in her place and encouraged to look and act like a Monroe clone, which undercut the effect of this otherwise cute and clever comedy. The film was a commercial failure, and Betty Grable took this lack of success as a cue to end her twenty-five year Hollywood career. This cutre original one sheet poster is folded and in very fine condition, with only minor fold separations.

MARILYN (1963) 6544

Original 20th Century Fox Three Sheet Poster (41×81).  Folded.  Very fine plus condition.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
Original 20th Century Fox Three Sheet Poster (41x81) for the Harold Medford documentary, MARILYN (1963)—starring Marilyn Monroe and narrated by Rock Hudson. This excellent but often overlooked documentary is a compilation of clips from Monroe’s movies for Fox starting from her beginnings as a bit player in A TICKET TO TOMAHAWK (1950) to final role in SOMETHING’S GOT TO GIVE (1962), a film that was never finished. Monroe’s erratic behavior pushed the film to more than $1 million over budget in just a few weeks of filming; so, Fox fired Monroe. But when co-star Dean Martin refused to work with anybody else, Fox rehired Monroe. But when Monroe died in August of 1962, Fox decided to scrap the whole project. This original three sheet poster is folded and in very fine plus condition.

SOME LIKE IT HOT (1959) 7144

Original United Artists Six Sheet Poster (80.5×82).  Linen-backed.  Very fine condition.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
Original United Artists Six Sheet Poster (80.5x82) for the Billy Wilder cross-dressing comedic masterpiece, SOME LIKE IT HOT (1959)—starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon. Some critics have dubbed this film to be the greatest Hollywood comedy of all time. Monroe as “Sugar” creates one of her most loved and memorable characters, but Lemmon and Curtis steal the show when they decide to become “Daphne” and “Josephine” and join an all-girl band in order to evade the mob and get to Florida. This gender-bending comedy way ahead of its time was nominated for six Academy Awards—including Best Actor for Lemmon and Best Director for Wilder. It won the Oscar for Best Costume Design. This original six sheet poster is linen-backed and in very fine condition, with some touch-up to fold lines and a minor repair in one small area.

BUS STOP (1956) 12753

ORIGINAL 20th Century Fox Six Sheet Poster (81×81).  Linen-backed.  Very fine condition.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
Original 20th Century Fox Six Sheet poster for the Joshua Logan romantic comedy, BUS STOP (1956)—starring Marilyn Monroe, Don Murray, and Arthur O’Connell. BUS STOP was written by William Inge. Inge had won the Pulitzer Prize for playwriting for PICNIC in 1953. Immediately after PICNIC came the play BUS STOP. This is the story of innocent rodeo cowboy Bo (Murray) who falls in love with a café singer Cherie (Monroe) in Phoenix. She tries to run away to Los Angeles, but Murray finds her and forces her to get on the bus back to his Montana ranch. Monroe creates one of her most memorable and deeply touching characters in “chanteuse” Cherie. In his book on Marilyn, the writer Norman Mailer asserts that the actress never looked more ravishing than she did in BUS STOP. The character of Bo was Murray’s first and best-remembered screen role and netted him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. William Inge later won an Academy Award for his screenplay SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS. This original linen backed six sheet is in very fine condition. The six sheet is, in our opinion, the best U.S. poster on this title.
