This is the story of grumpy, gin-swilling roustabout Charles Allnut (Bogart), who is running a little tramp steamer with supplies to small East African villages at the onset of World War I. When German troops invade and destroy Hepburn's missionary village, Allnut offers to take her on the Queen back to civilization, but not before carrying out a rather daring plan to blow up a German warship. Based on novel by C.S. Forester, the outstanding adaptation by James Agee and Huston was packed with unforgettable exchanges by Hepburn and Bogart and infused throughout by Huston with hilarious tongue-and cheek satire. One of the most popular movies of 1951, it was nominated for Best Director for Huston, Best Screenplay for Agee and Huston, Best Actress for Hepburn, and Best Actor for Humphrey Bogart (which he won).
