This film has great action scenes and even better special effects than the original. However, many critics have complained that the film is too heavy in tone. Almost every line of dialogue is delivered as if it were cosmically profound, which some people find tedious if not pretentious. On the plus side, there is much better character development in this sequel, especially the development of the supporting roles.
