THE BELLE OF NEW YORK (1952) 9572

Original MGM One Sheet Poster (27×41). Linen-backed. Very Fine.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
This is an original MGM One Sheet Poster (27x41) for the Charles Walters musical comedy, THE BELLE OF NEW YORK—starring Fred Astaire and Vera-Ellen. The film was a remake of a 1919 silent film of the same name starring Marion Davies. Both films were based on the first American stage musical to play London’s West End, where it was a big hit in 1897. Originally, the film was to be made with Astaire and Judy Garland, but the two stars could never get their overlapping schedules to allow them to work together. So, the female lead was given to Vera-Ellen. She is a seductive, charming, and talented dancer, and her fun solo “Naughty But Nice” is a delight to watch. Her physical style of dancing is a nice complement to Astaire’s smooth elegance. Harry Warren and Johnny Mercer wrote the musical numbers, and Astaire’s “I Wanna Be a Dancin’ Man” is certainly one of his most memorable performances. This original one sheet poster is linen-backed and in very fine condition. The linen lip has been trimmed up to the poster. There are some minor distresses to the top border, and the fold lines are left untouched. There is no missing paper, and the colors are bright.

Additional DescriptionMore Details

This is the story of Raoul (Raft), who rises from a coalmine laborer to being one of the best dancer in Europe, and finally to owning his own club. The dances are actually Raft’s vaudeville and nightclub act before he came to Hollywood. At one point in his early career, Raft was a tea-room gigolo dancing with dowagers for tips and more. This great 30s dance film is more about mood and style and not so much about plot. Sally Rand does her famous “fan dance” complete with see-through negligee.
