PERSHINGS CRUSADERS (1918) 13816

Original Committee on Public Information One Sheet Poster (27×41). Stone lithograph. Linen-backed. Near Mint.

This is an original Committee on Public Information One Sheet Poster for a very early documentary film concerning American troops in France during World War I, PERSHING’S CRUSADERS (1918). Photographed by the U.S. Signal Corps and the Navy, this film was the first official feature documentary sanctioned by the U.S. government. The film is divided into two parts: the first an address to Congress by President Wilson and showing flashes of Germany’s invasion of Belgium, the sinking of the Lusitania, and the resulting organizing the the Americans to go to Europe to fight. The second part shows American camps in France, front-line trenches, General Pershing at the front, and the German Kaiser reviewing goose-stepping troops in Berlin. This original stone lithograph one sheet poster is linen-backed and in near mint condition. A linen-backed snipe (a label for the Forest Theater in Philadelphia extolling the film) is sold with the poster. Incredible, intricate, gorgeous stone lithography.

Hattie McDaniel: Black Ambition, White Hollywood

Hattie McDaniel is best known for her performance as Mammy, the sassy foil to Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind. Though the role called for yet another wide–grinned, subservient black domestic, McDaniel transformed her character into one who was loyal yet subversive, devoted yet bossy. Her powerful performance would [...]
