WHIRLPOOL (1949) 4889
Original 20th Century Fox One Sheet Poster (27×41). Very fine.
This is an original 20th Century Fox One Sheet Poster (27x41) for the Otto Preminger film-noir crime drama, WHIRLPOOL (1949)—starring Gene Tierney, Richard Conte, Jose Ferrer, and Charles Bickford. This film is part psychological drama and part film-noir. The beautiful wife (Tierney) of a famous psychoanalyst Dr. William Sutton (Conte) gets caught stealing an expensive pin from a department store. An infamous astrologer David Korvo (Ferrer) comes to her aid and uses hypnosis to make her an unconscious party to an elaborate scheme involving murder. All of the acting performances are good, especially Tierney who does an outstanding job at portraying both the vulnerability and desperation of her character; indeed, the actress used the film as a mini "comeback” after a two-year absence. The black and white cinematography and use of the camera are very good. This original one sheet poster is in very fine condition.
VERONICA LAKE (1946) 13916
Original Paramount Pictures French Personality Poster (24×32). Roger Soubie artist. Folded. Near mint condition.
This is an original 1946 Paramount Pictures French Personality Poster (24x32) for the American actress and pin-up model VERONICA LAKE. The actress enjoyed both popular and critical acclaim, most notably for her femme fatale roles in film noir movies of the 1940s and for her “peek-a-boo” hairstyle. Renowned French artist Roger Soubie captures her radiant beauty perfectly in this exquisite original poster. Many of Lake's film posters do not LOOK like Veronica Lake; this poster absolutely does. Personality posters such as this were often seen in cinemas to promote a studios stars. Originally folded, this poster is in near mint condition.
THEY WONT BELIEVE ME (1947) 15022
Original RKO Title Lobby Card (11×14). Very good.
This is an original RKO Title Lobby Card (11x14) for the Irving Pichel film-noir drama, THEY WON’T BELIEVE ME (1947)—starring Robert Young, Susan Hayward, Jane Greer, and Rita Johnson. Before his beloved TV characters—the wise dad on “Father Knows Best “ or the kindly Dr. Marcus Welby, Robert Young played many different characters, not all of them good guys. In this film he gives remarkable depth to the role of a man who marries a woman for her money (Johnson) and then cheats on her constantly. The three actresses also give outstanding performances, particularly Rita Johnson as the manipulative wife with a touching frailty and Susan Hayward as office girl with lofty ambitions. This original title lobby card is in very good condition.
THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT (1940) 19643
Original Warner Bros. One Sheet Poster (27×41). Linen-backed. Very fine condition.
This is an original Warner Bros. One Sheet Poster (27x41) for the Raoul Walsh film-noir crime drama, THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT (1940)—starring George Raft, Ann Sheridan, Ida Lupino, and Humphrey Bogart. Raft and Bogart are small-time truck drivers. Sheridan is a wise cracking waitress, and Lupino plays the vicious, scorned woman. This film was popular with audiences not because of the story so much as the forceful performances by all the main actors and the excellent direction by Walsh. The most memorable moment in the film is the trial sequence in which Lupino disintegrates into hysterics on the witness stand. This original one sheet poster is linen-backed and in very fine condition.
THE WRONG MAN (1956) 20198
Original Warner Bros. Scene Lobby Card (11×14). Very good condition.
Original Warner Bros. Scene Lobby Card (11x14) for the Alfred Hitchcock crime drama, THE WRONG MAN (1956)—starring Henry Fonda, Vera Miles, Anthony Quayle, and Harold J. Stone. This film tells the true story of Manny Balestrero (Fonda), a club musician unjustly accused of an armed robbery. Though Manny vehemently protest his innocence, his actions at every turn seem to belie his guilt. Instead of the usual Hitchcock cameo appearance, the director narrates the prologue, the only time he actually spoke in any of his films. Fonda gives an excellent performance of the quietly stunned Manny who slowly descends into total helplessness and powerlessness as he wends his way through the criminal justice system. This original scene card is in very good condition, with only minor edge wear and some pinholes.
THE WOMAN ON THE BEACH (1947) 9567
Original RKO One Sheet Poster (27×41). Fine plus condition.
This is an original RKO One Sheet Poster (27x41) for the Jean Renoir film-noir, THE WOMAN ON THE BEACH (1947)—starring Joan Bennett, Robert Ryan, and Charles Bickford. This performance by Bennett is one of her best as the self–described “tramp” embroiled in a marriage with Bickford kept together by hate, as much as love. Bickford is also excellent as the blinded, bitter, and jealous artist. The seamy, violent, and sado-masochistic relationship between Bennett and Bickford is fascinating to watch. This original one sheet poster is in fine plus condition.
THE THIRD MAN (1949) 20178
Original U.S. Selznick Releasing Organization Scene Lobby Card (11×14). Very fine plus condition.
Original U.S. Selznick Releasing Organization Scene Lobby Card (11x14) for the Carol Reed mystery thriller, THE THIRD MAN (1949)—starring Joseph Cotten, Alida Valli, Orson Welles, and Trevor Howard. This story, written by Graham Greene, is about an American pulp fiction writer (Cotten), who arrives in post-war Vienna only to find that the friend who invited him (Welles) is dead under mysterious circumstances. The ensuing mystery entangles Cotten in his friend’s involvement with the black market, with the multinational police, and his Czech girlfriend ( Valli). This excellent thriller was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Director for Reed and Best Editing. Robert Krasker won the Oscar for Best Cinematography. THE THIRD MAN is also remembered well for its intoxicating score by zither player Anton Karas. This original scene lobby card of Valli is in very fine plus condition.
THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (1955) 19368
Original United Artists Six Sheet Poster (81×81). Folded. Fine minus condition– with some fold distresses and separations, some water staining, some tears and missing paper, pinholes in the borders, and edge wear.
Original United Artists Six Sheet Poster (81x81) for the Charles Laughton film-noir thriller, THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (1955)—starring Robert Mitchum, Shelly Winters, and Lillian Gish. Beloved by Mitchum fans and considered by many to be a horror masterpiece, the film was a critical and box office flop. So much so that director Laughton swore he would never direct another film—and he didn’t. Mitchum gives a stunning and frightening performance as a religious fanatic who marries and murders widows for their money, believing he was helping God rid the world of women who arouse men’s carnal instincts. This original six sheet poster is folded and unrestored. It still retains good color and overall a very presentable appearance. Its condition is graded fine minus—with some fold distresses and separations, some water staining, some tears and missing paper, pinholes in the borders, and edge wear.
