YOUNG BILL HICKOK (1940) 19419
Original Republic Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41). Linen-backed. Very fine condition.
This is an original Republic Pictures One Sheet Poster (27x41) for the Joseph Kane musical western, YOUNG BILL HICKOK (1940)—starring Roy Rogers, George “Gabby” Hayes, Julie Bishop, and Sally Payne. In his early years at Republic, Roy Rogers specialized in historical westerns. This film dramatized the famed gunfighter’s first meeting with Calamity Jane (Payne). Or course, there are a handful of fun songs, including one performed by Hayes and Payne. This original one sheet poster is linen-backed and in very fine condition.
WHEN WE WERE KINGS (1996) 19795
Original Gramercy Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41). Rolled. Very fine plus condition.
This is an original Gramercy Pictures One Sheet Poster (27x41) for the Leon Gast boxing documentary, WHEN WE WERE KINGS (1996)—starring Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. This excellent documentary is about the boxing match between Ali and Forman for the World Heavyweight Championship in 1974. Ali was 33 years old at the time of the fight and considered by many to be washed up, but Ali pulled off an amazing upset and knocked out Foreman to begin another championship rein. Perhaps the best part of the documentary is at the end when they play the song “When We Were Kings” and show a montage of Ali’s fights during his amazing career. This original one sheet poster is rolled and in very fine plus condition.
THIS IS MY AFFAIR (1937) 767
Original 20th Century Fox One Sheet Poster (27×41). Stone lithograph. Linen-backed. Near mint.
This is an original 20th Century Fox One Sheet Poster (27x41) for the William A. Seiter romantic crime drama, THIS IS MY AFFAIR (1937)—starring Robert Taylor, Barbara Stanwyck and Victor McLaglen. Set at the turn of the century, Taylor plays a young naval officer who is given a secret mission by President William McKinley to uncover a ring of bank robbers. Taylor infiltrates the gang but falls in love with their female mascot and saloon singer Stanwyck in the process. Besides McKinley, there are actors also playing Teddy Roosevelt and Admiral Dewey. This original one sheet poster is in near mint condition. A truly beautiful example of the stone lithographer's art.
THE TROJAN WOMEN (1971) 4883
Original 23-page program (8.5×11) with 32 photos. Good condition.
This is an original 23-page program for the Michael Cacoyannis adaptation of the ancient Greek play by Euripides, THE TROJAN WOMEN (1971)—starring Katharine Hepburn, Vanessa Redgrave, and Genevieve Bujold, and Irene Papas. Euripides was the most popular poet of the ancient world, and this play is a stunning indictment of imperialist aggression at the time that Athens was fighting Sparta in the Peloponnesian War (431—404 B.C.). The play captures the extreme pain and anguish of the women of Troy after the city has fallen to the Greeks. The women weep over their lost city, their dead husbands and sons, and their lost honor as they are led away as Greek slaves. This is certainly one of the most powerful anti-war films ever made at the time of the war in Vietman. This rare program has 32 photos, a director’s note, biographies of all major actors, actresses, and director Cacoyannis. This original program is in good condition.
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (1956) 8650
Original Yugoslavian 1960s Re-release Poster (20×28). Very good condition with some small tears.
This is an original Yugoslavian 1960s Re-release Poster (20x28) for the Cecil B. DeMille biblical epic, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (1956)—starring Charlton Heston, Yul Brynner, Anne Baxter, and Edward G. Robinson. This is the story of Moses, born to slavery but raised as a son of Pharaoh, who learns of his Hebrew heritage and his divine mission as the deliverer of his people. This was DeMille’s second time to direct this story, but his first as a retelling directly of the Bible story; the 1923 version was a silent film told partially in a contemporaneous setting. Heston was chosen for the part because of his striking physical resemblance to Michelangelo’s sculpture of Moses. Brynner was chosen because of his magnificent performance in THE KING AND I (1956). Besides the outstanding acting from the major members of the cast, the film boasted a cast of literally thousands, marvelous special effects, beautifully detailed costumes, and lavish sets. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture but only won the much deserved Oscar for Best Special Effects. This 20x28 Yugoslavian poster is probably a re-release poster from the sixties. Modestly priced, the poster is in very good condition with some small tears. This art is significantly different from the 1956 posters, and shows Moses in two tableau from the film -- the parting of the red sea and the idolatry of the Children of Israel before the Golden Calf. Linen backing would help this small poster. Please see our post on Linen backing and Restoration.
THE RIGHT STUFF (1983) 8214
Original Warner Bros. One Sheet Poster (27×41). Unfolded. Near mint condition.
This is an original Warner Bros. One Sheet Poster (27x41) for the Philip Kaufman adventure drama, THE RIGHT STUFF (1983)--starring Sam Shepard, Scott Glenn, Ed Harris, and Dennis Quaid. This film is the screen adaptation of Tom Wolfe's book, the story of the original seven U.S. astronauts. These men, who pioneered U.S. space flight, were genuine U.S. superheroes. Kaufman's movie also shows their human qualities in facing the incredible Brave New World that spaceflight presented. The poster features great portraits of the seven actors by Tom Jung, the artist who did the style A STAR WARS one sheet. This original one sheet poster is rolled and in near mint condition. Beware of fakes. MovieArt will sell NO reproductions.
THE PRIVATE LIFE OF HENRY VIII (1933) 17914
Original Polish One Sheet Poster (24.5×36.5). Re-release of 1955. Linen-backed. Near Mint.
This is an original Polish One Sheet Poster (24.5x36.5) for the Alexander Korda historical classic, THE PRIVATE LIFE OF HENRY VIII (1933)—starring Charles Laughton and as Henry’s last five wives: Merle Oberon, Wendy Barrie, Elsa Lanchester, Binnie Barnes, and Everley Gregg. This early talkie begins with the execution of his second wife, Anne Boleyn, who was unable to provide the king a male heir. Charles Laughton, only 34-years-old at the time, gives one of the best performances of his life—lively, funny, energetic, and yet oftentimes lonely and hurt. He deservedly received the Academy Award for Best Actor and the film was nominated for Best Picture. Hungarian-born Korda made many wonderful films about European history and culture in which Laughton played three of his best characters—Henry VIII, artist Rembrandt, and Roman Emperor Claudius. Laughton’s real life wife, Elsa Lanchester, gives a wonderful performance as the daffy Anne of Cleves, and the comic chemistry between the two is quite funny and delightful. This original Polish poster was produced when the film was released in Poland in 1955 and is linen-backed and in near mint condition.
THE GREAT ESCAPE (1963) 19886
Original United Artists Three Sheet Poster (41×81). Linen-backed. Very fine condition.
Original three sheet poster for THE GREAT ESCAPE, John Sturges timeless film about tireless and determined Allied prisoners of war who plan an elaborate escape from a Nazi prisoner of war camp. An all star cast was assembled including James Garner, Richard Attenborough, James Donald, Charles Bronson and Donald Pleasance. But it was Steve McQueen who, in this film, permanently cemented super-star status and became the first real motorcyling icon since Brando had intimidated rural California folk in THE WILD ONE. McQueen's cross-country motorcycling was the exciting climax of Sturges lively and suspenseful tale of Allied soldiers who could be kept pinned down or penned up. This original three sheet poster is linen-backed and in very fine condition.

Hattie McDaniel: Black Ambition, White Hollywood
Hattie McDaniel is best known for her performance as Mammy, the sassy foil to Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind.
