2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968) 14822

Original 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY one sheet poster (27×41.) Edition of 1970. Very fine condition.

This poster is one in a series of one-sheet posters issued by MGM after the initial release of 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY in 1968. The poster is considered original, but the first campaign for the film featured illustrations by Frank McCall and even some color photographic posters. This poster, with its tagline, "The Ultimate Trip", was designed by Mike Kaplan and is said to have been issued to capitalize on what MGM came to see as a growing phenomenon -- people showing up to see the film while tripping on psychedelic drugs. It became de rigueur to see the film in an altered state. This film was certainly an "event" film, and the movie played for two to three years in one venue or another. MGM did not officially re-release the film until 1974. The first "starchild" poster is utterly undated and VERY rare, but subsequent editions of the poster are dated 1969, 1970, and 1971. This folded copy is in very fine condition with minimal fold separation.
