full.The Women

Original MGM Three Sheet Poster (41.25×78) for the George Cukor dramatic comedy, THE WOMEN (1939) starring Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, and Rosalind Russell. Anita Loos adapted the screenplay from the popular Broadway play by Clare Booth Luce. The play opened at the Ethel Barrymore Theater on September 7, 1937 and played for 666 performances. The story revolves around wealthy Mary Haines (Shearer), who is totally unaware that her husband is having an affair with shop girl Crystal Allen (Crawford). There are over 130 roles in the movie, all played by women. Furthermore, all of the animals used (dogs and horses) were also female. Within two years of the release of this film, Shearer would retire permanently from the screen; within four years, Crawford would leave MGM at Louis B. Mayer’s “request.” MovieArt has received this poster back from the conservation firm where it was linen backed and restored and the result is spectacular. Very rare in this format. We know of only one occasion on which this style three sheet ever appeared in an auction. A spectacular image of Crawford — and two other major MGM stars, Norma Shearer and Rosalind Russell. The photo was taken before the rebacking. We will post the new photo soon.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original American Releasing Corporation One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Dan Milner science fiction thriller, PHANTOM FROM 10,000 LEAGUES (1955) starring Kent Taylor, Cathy Downs, Michael Whalen, and Helene Stanton. This bargain basement monster film chronicles an amphibian-like creature, created by nuclear radiation, who suddenly starts killing every unfortunate person who strays near it lair. This formulaic co-feature from the heady days of drive-in theaters in the 1950s is inept in almost every way, except for Ronald Stein’s surprisingly foreboding score. This original one sheet poster is folded and in good condition—with multiple scotch tape stains in the front border area and some fold separations and minor paper loss at the fold intersection.

full.magnumforce-6sh-8057

Original Warner Bros. International Six Sheet Poster (41×81) for the Ted Post crime thriller, MAGNUM FORCE (1973)—starring Clint Eastwood, Hal Holbrook, and Mitch Ryan. This is the second of the five “Dirty Harry” movies and has the highest body count at 30. One of the finest thrillers of the 1970s with an interesting and compelling story, MAGNUM FORCE pits Harry against a vicious group of cops-turned-vigilantes. The action scenes are fast and furious. Eastwood is in fine form in this his signature role, and the supporting cast is equally strong and memorable. With the original movie accused of “fascism” by many critics, Eastwood and his collaborators set out to show what true vigilante justice is all about and how Harry deals with it.

This international six sheet is slightly shorter than the usual American six sheets – by five inches. The dimensions are 76 x 76 inches. This poster is printed on two individual panels 38 x 76 inches and we have shown each panel on two separate photos. The two panels are intended to be joined to display the poster. This is a theater-used copy which has not been joined together with glue. So it’s on two separate sheets. Ideal for linen backing. The poster has been folded and is in fine plus condition. This poster would linen back nicely.
As us about poster conservation.
