TRADER TOM OF THE CHINA SEAS (1954) 9768

Original Republic Pictures Three Sheet Poster (41×81).  Very fine condition.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
This is an original Republic Pictures Three Sheet Poster (41x81) for the Franklin Adreon 12-chapter action adventure serial, TRADER TOM OF THE CHINA SEAS (1954). This serial is typical of the Republic serials of the 1950s - adventurous, cliffhanging, episodic. This poster features the almost-pulp art which typifies the Republic style. Starring b-picture actors Aline Towne and Harry Lauter, the plot is thin. These two are sent to the far east by the United Nations no less to stifle revolution and engage in general heroics, which they do over the span of 12 serial chapters. Forget the narrative and focus on this very colorful poster, unmistakably successful in capturing the zeitgeist of the serial. This original three sheet poster is in very fine condition.

SPY SMASHER (1942) 15430

Original Republic Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41). Linen-backed. Very Fine.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
This is an original Republic Pictures One Sheet Poster (27x41) for the William Witney 12-episode serial, SPY SMASHER (1942)—starring Kane Richmond, Marguerite Chapman, and Hans Schumm. While many film critics consider the “serial” to be the bastard cousin of the feature film, this serial has received many accolades, including “the finest serial ever made” and “the Citizen Kane of serials.” Adapted from a popular comic book, this serial has some of the best-choreographed action scenes and astonishing stunts. Alan Armstrong (aka Spy Smasher) battles a Nazi villain known as “The Mask,” who heads a gang of saboteurs determined to spread destruction across America. This film was made during the dark, early days of World War II and intentionally summons up the righteous courage of early war propaganda films. This original one sheet poster is linen-backed and in very fine condition. There is some repair in the lower left background image and repair of a tear in the lower left corner.

Original Republic Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41). Very fine.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
This is an original Republic Pictures One Sheet Poster (27x41) for the Fred C. Brannon sci-fi classic, MISSILE MONSTERS (1958)—starring Walter Reid, Lois Collier, Gregory Gaye, and James Craven. This is the feature version of the previously released Republic serial, FLYING DISC MAN FROM MARS (1950) about a Martian warlord named Mota who is armed with sinister weapons from another planet and who teams up with a mad scientist to conquer the world. Even in the angst of the early cold war period, this image of the man in the missile could not be read as anything other than comic. This original one sheet poster is in very fine condition.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
Original Republic Pictures One Sheet Poster (27x41) for Chapter 1 of the B. Reeves Eason and Joseph Kane adventure sci-fi serial, DARKEST AFRICA (1936)—starring Clyde Beatty, Manuel King, and Elaine Shepard. In this 15-episode serial, Beatty goes to Africa to rescue the Goddess of Joba, who is being held against her will by the high priest. This is the first serial released by the newly formed Republic Pictures, and posters of this early serial are exceptionally rare. This stunning example has restoration with colored pencils to missing crossfold paper as well as minor border and corner chipping. Wikipedia's short ID for Clyde Beatty: Clyde Beatty (June 10, 1903 – July 19, 1965) joined the circus as a cage cleaner as a teen and became famous as a lion tamer and animal trainer. He also was a circus impresario who owned his own show that later merged with the Cole Bros. Circus to form the Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros. Circus. Very Good/Fine on linen.

Hattie McDaniel: Black Ambition, White Hollywood

Hattie McDaniel is best known for her performance as Mammy, the sassy foil to Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind. Though the role called for yet another wide–grinned, subservient black domestic, McDaniel transformed her character into one who was loyal yet subversive, devoted yet bossy.
