THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE (1936) 19995

Original Warner Bros. Scene Lobby Card (11×14).  Linen-finished.  Some minor flaws only visible under close examination.  Fine to very fine condition.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
Original Warner Bros. Scene Lobby Card (11x14) for the Michael Curtiz epic war adventure, THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE (1936)—starring Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland. This is the only scene card in the set for this film which features both Flynn and de Havilland. Errol Flynn, flush with the huge success of CAPTAIN BLOOD, re-teams with co-star de Havilland and director Curtiz to create this epic tale, which owes more to the prose of Rudyard Kipling than to the famous poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson. While the final “charge” is one of the most incredible scenes ever filmed, so many horses were injured and had to be destroyed that humane societies nationwide raised such an outcry that standards were established to bar this kind of cruelty to animals in the future. The card does exhibit some minor flaws only visible under close examination-- including a small chip our of the top left corner, pinholes in the top border, minor staining in the bottom corners, and some light creases. This lovely linen-finished (not to be confused with linen-backing) scene card features the classic pair in a smoldering embrace and is in fine to very fine condition.

THE AVENGERS (1942) 6531

Original Paramount Pictures Style A One Sheet Poster (27×41).  Very fine condition, unbacked.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
Original Paramount Pictures Style A One Sheet Poster (27x41) for the Harold French war drama, THE AVENGERS (1942)—starring Hugh Williams, Griffith Jones, Deborah Kerr, and Ralph Richardson. 1940s British cinema is understandably packed with wartime propaganda pieces, and this film (British title: THE DAY WILL DAWN) is markedly more propagandistic than most of the period. Williams plays a British foreign correspondent investigating German U-boat activities in Norway. The Brits of course save the day from the cowardly Germans. And though sacrifice is made; the greater good is served. Notice the Morse Code dot-dot-dot-dash across the bottom -- the Allies moniker of Victory.

THE ANGEL WORE RED (1960) 19809

Original MGM Window Card (14×22). Very fine condition.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
This is an original MGM Window Card (14x22) for the Nunnally Johnson war drama, THE ANGEL WORE RED (1960)—starring Ava Gardner, Dirk Bogarde, and Joseph Cotten. Adapted by Johnson from the Bruce Mashall novel “The Fair Bride,” this was the last film directed by the prolific screenwriter Johnson. It tells the story of a priest (Bogarde) who travels to Spain during the Spanish Civil War to join the Loyalists and falls in love with the beautiful Soledad (Gardner). Bogarde gives a dynamic performance as the tortured young priest who has lost his faith in the church but not his faith in God. Gardner, one of the most beautiful women in the movies, is also very good as the cynical yet somehow innocent entertainer and prostitute. The chemistry between the two is intense and believable. Both the Loyalists and the Franco rebels are presented as equally flawed and totalitarian. This original window card is in very fine condition.
