SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER (1959) 13830

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Columbia Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Joseph L. Mankiewicz dramatic classic, SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER (1959) starring Elizabeth Taylor, Katharine Hepburn, and Montgomery Clift. Based on a play by the very successful Broadway icon Tennessee Williams, the screenplay was skillfully adapted by Gore Vidal. Set in New Orleans in 1937, Hepburn plays a lady of means who is mourning the loss of her son. She wants to donate a million dollars to the hospital where Clift is a doctor if he will perform a lobotomy on her niece Taylor. The young woman seems to be totally traumatized by what she witnessed last summer. Tennessee Williams never forgave his own mother for letting his sister Rose have a lobotomy to “cure” her anxiety problems. The whole story turns on the character of the son Sebastian, but you never see his face or hear his voice in Taylor’s flashbacks. He is supposed to have died of a heart attack, but the audience finally discovers that it was a horribly cruel case of gay bashing. Both Taylor and Hepburn were nominated for Oscars. It was the eighth nomination for Hepburn and the third nomination for Taylor. The one sheet is in very fine condition.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Columbia Pictures Title Lobby Card (11×14) for the Leigh Jason adventure comedy, THREE GIRLS ABOUT TOWN (1941) starring Joan Blondell, Robert Benchley, Binnie Barnes, and Janet Blair. The lower right corner was dog-eared in the border area only and reinforced from the reverse
with paper tape – about 1.5 inch. We grade the card as fine plus to very fine. Other than this the scarce title card is a very nice example.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Columbia Pictures Scene Lobby Card (11×14) for the Gordon Wiles crime drama, LADY FROM NOWHERE (1936) starring Mary Astor, Charles Quigley, Thurston Hall, and Victor Kilian. This is a somewhat scarce card. The card was once in a saddle-stitched collectors “keepsake” book. It was removed but there is damage and holes along the left border. Therefore we have graded it as very good plus. Otherwise quite fine.
This card could be restored. Ask us about poster conservation.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Columbia Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Jonathan Kaplan trucker drama, WHITE LINE FEVER (1975) starring Jan-Michael Vincent, Kay Lenz, and Slim Pickens. In this gritty 70s action B-movie, Carroll Jo Hummer (Vincent) is an independent long haul trucker. When his sleazy boss (Pickens) wants him to deliver illegal cigarettes and slot machines, Hummer refuses and becomes a target for a vicious campaign of intimidation. Director Kaplan—who had been churning out B-movie exploitation films like NIGHT CALL NURSES (1972) and THE STUDENT TEACHERS (1973)—actually delivers a hell-raising bare-knuckled story that pits a tough man against the odds. Vincent gives one his strongest and most convincing performances of his career. This original one sheet poster is folded and in very fine condition.

This original three sheet poster is folded and in fine condition.

THIS WOMAN IS DANGEROUS (1952) 4695

full.thiswomanisdangerous-3sh-4695

Original Warner Brothers Three Sheet poster for the Felix Feist film THIS WOMAN IS DANGEROUS starring Joan Crawford, David Brian, Dennis Morgan and Philip Carey. The film was the last film that Crawford made to fulfill her contract with Warner Brothers. That contract spanned from the time of MILDRED PIERCE, an unqualified success, to 1952 with the release of THIS WOMAN IS DANGEROUS, part crime drama part soap opera. Crawford and Brian head up a gang of thieves; Crawford is the brains and Brian the muscle. And they also are “involved.” But after a particularly successful heist, Crawford goes off to a hospital to treat an eye malady. Subsequently, in a page straight out of DARK VICTORY, but without the attendant class, Crawford falls in love with her doctor, played by Dennis Morgan – his bedside manner, no doubt. But Brian is not taking that lying down and he…but stop! No spoilers here. A somewhat ordinary film of its type, but the poster shows the diva Crawford in her late Warner Brothers no-wire-hangers incarnation. And all in pink and in the pink as well. The three sheet is comprised of two different panels which are joined together to make one large-format poster. This poster was theater-used, but the two panels have not been glued together. There are some small tears, a few very small holes and general aging. However, the paper has good structural integrity. This poster could be linen backed very successfully. We have graded it as fine plus. Ask us about linen backing and poster conservation.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Columbia Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Lawrence Kasdan western, SILVERADO (1985) starring Kevin Kline, Scott Glenn, Kevin Costner, and Danny Glover. The film tells the story of a bunch of misfits who band together in 1880 to right the injustices that have befallen a small western town. In making this film, director Kasdan fulfilled his life-long dream to make a western. Although not a blockbuster at the box office, the new world of video rentals made the film an unexpected and overwhelming hit, lifting the film to the classic cult status that it enjoys today. Although the film embraces every western clichés, it serves them up with such exuberance that they seem new and fresh. This original one sheet poster is folded and in near mint condition.

GULLIVER’S TRAVELS (THE 3 WORLDS OF GULLIVER) (1960) 9490

full.3worldsofgulliver-fr-47x63-9490-vg

Original French Re-Release One Panel (47×63) for the Jack Sher animation adventure, GULLIVER’S TRAVELS (1960) also titled 3 WORLDS OF GULLIVER in the U.S. Kerwin Matthews is the lead actor in this retelling of Jonathan Swift’s satirical story, but the real star is special effects guru Ray Harryhausen, who brought his special art and gifts to the classic story of a giant among the Little People. This story has been made many times over the years, once as an animated film by Dave Fleischer (1939.) Mostly these versions have been made into family-friendly adventure stories and 3 WORLDS OF GULLIVER is no exception. This French one panel is absolutely charming, but it has some significant fold separations. Therefore, we have to grade it very good only. We recommend linen backing. Ask us about poster restoration and conservation. This poster will look great once it has been restored because the image is intact and the colors are vivid. The edition is an early re-release; the printer Richier Laugier, Paris. The art is by Jean Mascii, but the re-release poster is unsigned. The original poster on this title has some additional art and color tableau, but in our opinion this poster is better! One of those unusual instances in which a re-release poster is better than the original.

DAMN THE DEFIANT! (1962) 11045

full.damnthedefiant-1sh-11045

Original Columbia Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Lewis Gilbert rip-snorting naval adventure, DAMN THE DEFIANT! (1962) starring Alec Guinness, Dirk Bogarde, Maurice Denham, Nigel Stock, and Anthony Quayle. This British production, originally titled H.M.S. DEFIANT, is based on the 1797 Spithead Mutiny in which seamen protested living conditions aboard British naval vessels and also demanded a pay raise. This complicated story rooted in history is totally engrossing, with bold characters and lots of exciting naval action. Guinness made this film during a two month break in the shooting of LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (1962). This original one sheet poster is in fine plus condition, theater used, but with no fold separations, colors vivid.
