Universal Pictures hired him for $5 a day as a bit player and stuntman. By the end of his career, Jones had more than 160 film credits to his name in a career that began in 1918. By the 1930s he was under contract with Columbia Pictures, who released this window card to promote the “all-talking” westerns starring Jones. With only some rusty tack holes, the condition is fine plus.

Original Belgian Poster (14×22) for the Otto Preminger crime drama, ANATOMY OF A MURDER (1959) starring James Stewart, Lee Remick, Ben Gazzara, Arthur O’Connell, and George C. Scott. One of the best films of courtroom drama, the film was still highly controversial, based partially on the open use of words like “bitch,” “contraceptive,” “penetration,” “rape,” “slut,” and “sperm.” Upon its original release, the film was banned in Chicago. And James Stewart’s father was so offended by the film that he took out an ad in his local newspaper urging people not to see it. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards—including Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Actor for Stewart, and Best Supporting Actor for both O’Connell and Scott. This original Belgian poster is in fine plus to very fine condition.

Original Columbia Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Frank Borzage classic anti-war drama, NO GREATER GLORY (1934) starring George Breakston and Jimmy Butler. The film is an adaptation of the biographical novel by Ferenc Molnar. Set in post World War I depression era Germany, it is the story of two rival gangs who “go to war” over a vacant lot that is the only place left for them to play. Told from the perspective of children, the film is an unusually sensitive evocation of the pain of youth and the senselessness of war. Ironically, Butler would himself be a casualty of war during World War II. This original stone lithograph one sheet poster is linen-backed and in near mint condition with only minimal touch-up.

SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER (1959) 13620

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Columbia Pictures Title Lobby Card (11×14) for the Joseph L. Mankiewicz dramatic classic, SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER (1959) starring Elizabeth Taylor, Katharine Hepburn, and Montgomery Clift. Based on a play by the very successful Broadway icon Tennessee Williams, the screenplay was skillfully adapted by Gore Vidal. Set in New Orleans in 1937, Hepburn plays a lady of means who is mourning the loss of her son. She wants to donate a million dollars to the hospital where Clift is a doctor if he will perform a lobotomy on her niece Taylor. The young woman seems to be totally traumatized by what she witnessed last summer. Tennessee Williams never forgave his own mother for letting his sister Rose have a lobotomy to “cure” her anxiety problems. The whole story turns on the character of the son Sebastian, but you never see his face or hear his voice in Taylor’s flashbacks. He is supposed to have died of a heart attack, but the audience finally discovers that it was a horribly cruel case of gay bashing. Both Taylor and Hepburn were nominated for Oscars. It was the eighth nomination for Hepburn and the third nomination for Taylor. This title card has two paper abrasions and is therefore graded as good and priced appropriately.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Columbia Pictures Scene Lobby Card (11×14) for the Gordon Wiles crime drama, LADY FROM NOWHERE (1936) starring Mary Astor, Charles Quigley, Thurston Hall, and Victor Kilian. This lobby card was once bound in a collector’s “keepsake” album. When it was removed from the album the left edge was necessarily damaged. Therefore we have graded this card as very good. Having said that the rest of the card is really quite fine. This is a scarce Mary Astor title.
