Many critics consider this film to be Hitchcock’s first true masterpiece. The film was produced by David O. Selznick, with whom Hitchcock clashed from the beginning, due to Selznick’s obsessive control over the film. Olivier is perfect as a broken man living in the past, who marries a frightened and weak Fontaine. By the end of the film, she evolves into a mature and strong woman capable of holding her own. Sanders is positively hateful, and Anderson portrays one of the most coldly sadistic figures in cinematic history. Besides great acting and direction, the film has magnificent cinematography and a wonderfully haunting score by Franz Waxman. The film was nominated for eleven Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Olivier, Best Actress for Fontaine, Best Supporting Actress for Judith Anderson, and Best Director for Hitchcock (his first director nomination).
