FAST LIFE (1929) 7301

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original one sheet poster, expertly linen-backed, for the pre-code early sound film FAST LIFE starring Loretta Young, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., William Holden and Chester Morris. Directed by John Francis Dillon. Loretta Young, arguably one of the most beautiful women to ever make a film, was a huge star beginning late 1920s until her famous TV show in the 1950s. On this poster, she appears rather prim, in a bonnet, but two young turks, Chester Morris and Doug Fairbanks, Jr. are fighting over her. The film is actually a courtroom drama with Fairbanks, Jr., getting sent to death row for ostensibly murdering another man for looking at his wife, Young. William Holden, not to be confused with the famous star William Holden, also appears in the film. Beautiful rare stone lithograph from First National Pictures.

LONG PANTS (1927) 20814

full.longpants-sc-20814

Original First National Pictures Scene Lobby Card (11×14) for the Frank Capra silent comedy, LONG PANTS (1927) starring Harry Langdon, Gladys Brockwell, Alan Roscoe, and Priscilla Bonner. Harry (Langdon) has been kept in knee pants for years by his overprotective parents, but the day finally comes when he is given his first pair of long pants. His parents expect him to marry his childhood sweetheart, but Harry is much more interested in Bebe—a “fast” woman from the big city. Langdon’s brief career as a top-ranked silent comic was “meteoric” when he has signed to make comic shorts for the Mack Sennett Studio in 1923. By the 1930s, however, he was just another aging trouper, slogging his way through low-budget remakes of his best silent work. This original scene lobby card is in very fine plus condition.

HER WILD OAT (1927) 20812

full.herwildoat-sc-20812

Original First National Pictures Scene Lobby Card (11×14) for the Marshall Neilan comedy, HER WILD OAT (1927) starring Colleen Moore, Larry Kent, Hallam Cooley, and Gwen Lee. Moore plays an orphan whose parents have left her nothing but a lunch wagon, a dog, and a lot of ambition. Basically the film is a version of the Pygmalion story of a working-class girl who is taken in hand by an officious male and taught how to impersonate a person of noble birth. No prints of the film were known to exist until an excellent print surfaced in the Czech National Archives in Prague in 2001. This original and rare scene lobby card is in fine plus condition.

SHE HAD TO SAY YES (1933) 1915

full.shehadtosayyes-1sh-1915

Original First National Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the George Amy and Busby Berkeley drama, SHE HAD TO SAY YES (1933) starring Loretta Young, Winnie Lightner, and Lyle Talbot. This was Berkeley’s first directorial credit (shared with the film’s editor), and he got stuck with one of the most sleazy and sexist scripts in pre-code Hollywood, in which the boss decides to use secretaries to “entertain” clients after hours. The exploitation, manipulation, and harassment of women are the focus of every scene. Every male role is a sleazy businessman who constantly tries to trick a woman into sex or into making money for him. This original one sheet poster is folded and in very fine condition, with some minor fold separations and distresses. One of the best pre-code posters we have seen. You have to say YES.

STAGE STRUCK (1936) 15020

full.stagestruck-sc

Original First National Pictures Scene Lobby Card (11×14) for the Busby Berkeley musical comedy, STAGE STRUCK (1936)—starring Dick Powell, Joan Blondell, and Warren William. Following the pattern of their earlier musical hits, in this film Broadway director George (Powell) has to stage a show starring a wealthy but untalented performer (think Paris Hilton in 1936) named Peggy (Blondell), who is starring only because she is backing the show. Berkeley directed the film while also going through a trial for manslaughter resulting from driving while drunk. Despite the fact that Berkeley was known for his outrageous and surreal production numbers, a tight budget precluded any of these signature extravaganzas. This original scene lobby card is in very fine plus condition.

EMPLOYEE’S ENTRANCE (1933) 16290

full.employeesentrance 1s 16290

Original First National Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the depression-era, department store drama, EMPLOYEE’S ENTRANCE (1933) directed by Roy Del Ruth and starring Warren William, Loretta Young, and Wallace Ford. 12,000 workers pass through the “employee’s entrance” of New York’s Franklin Monroe & Co department store in 1933, but the firm’s financial condition is going down fast. William is an amoral, conniving, tyrannical manager, and Loretta Young (at age 20) is a new sales girl who sleeps with William in order to get her job. Ford is a rising star in the store and secretly married to Young. But even though William is a tyrant, he also struggles to avoid laying off thousands of employees in a fight to the death with the bankers. The screenplay is well written, fast paced, and witty. This was a “pre-code” film and seems quite risque for the time. This era of social frankness would not reemerge until the counter-culture of the 1960′s. This original one sheet poster is linen-backed and in fine plus condition. The colors are vivid, and there is no missing paper. There is some minimal repair to fold separations. A truly stunning “pre-code” poster.
