Original Maysles Brothers Productions, Inc. premiere poster (25×35) for the Albert and David Maysles rock concert documentary, GIMME SHELTER (1971) starring the Rolling Stones, the Jefferson Airplane, and the Flying Burrito Brothers. This film is a documentary of the 1969 Rolling Stones Tour, with much of the focus on the tragic concert at Altamont Speedway in December of 1969—only four months after the iconic Woodstock Festival. About 300,000 people came to the concert, and the organizers put the Hell’s Angels in charge of security. The Angels spent most of their time beating up spectators and killing at least one. This event was construed by the media to herald the end of halcyon hippie days of rock. This original poster was created by the Maysles Brothers for the New York City Premiere at the Plaza Theater. The poster is unusual not only because the premiere poster is very rare, but also because of the anachronistic photo of the Stones circa 1965 – four years before the fateful venue at Altamont. GIMME SHELTER was subsequently distributed by 20th Century Fox, but this poster is not a Fox one sheet.
