full.mightyjoeyoung C1:2s B 16860

Original RKO Style B Half Sheet Poster (22×28) for the Ernest B. Schoedsack adventure fantasy, MIGHTY JOE YOUNG (1949) starring Terry Moore, Ben Johnson, and Robert Armstrong. This is perhaps the most charming of all the “great apes” films and certainly has the best special effects. Willis O’Brien’s and protégé Ray Harryhausen’s stop action animation made Mighty Joe Young move realistically with incredible facial motions. This is the story of a girl who raises a gorilla from infancy in the wilds of Africa. She is wooed and wowed by an American showman, played by Armstrong who was also in KING KONG (1933). Eventually he brings the girl and the gorilla back to America to star in a nightclub act. The film won the Oscar for Best Special Effects, including the famous scene where Mighty Joe holds up a stage with Moore playing a grand piano. This original half sheet poster is folded and in good condition only. It would be a perfect candidate for restoration and linen-backing.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Belgian poster (14×22) for the Tim Whelan western, TEXAS LADY (1955) starring Claudette Colbert, Barry Sullivan, Ray Collins, and Gregory Walcott. Prudence Webb (Colbert) inherits a local newspaper in an isolated Texas town. The men who run the town do not exactly welcome a woman’s “interference” with “their” newspaper. Lucky for Prudence, a card shark (Sullivan) she beat in New Orleans comes to her rescue. Some critics complained bitterly about the corny screenplay, but Colbert’s portrayal of a strong and independent woman is unusual for a western of the mid-1950s. This original Belgian poster is in very good condition, with some rather hard edge damage at the upper border area. But the image on the poster is fine>

SLIGHTLY SCARLET (1956) 6712

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original RKO Insert Poster (14×36) for the Allan Dwan film noir, SLIGHTLY SCARLET (1956) starring John Payne, Rhonda Fleming, Arlene Dahl, and Kent Taylor. The film was based on a novel by James M. Cain, who already had three of his books adapted for the screen in the 1940s: DOUBLE INDEMNITY (1944), MILDRED PIERCE (1945), and THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE (1946). This story has a very convoluted plot about scheming and political intrigue in California. Payne reprises his small-time gangster role, and his twin temptations are Fleming (the mayor’s girl Friday) and Dahl (a man-devouring kleptomaniac). Legendary noir cinematographer John Alton works in color here and introduces surreal bursts of lime green, burnt orange, and deep orchid into his otherwise bleak and dark trapezoids. This insert is unfolded and is in very fine condition.

HOLIDAY AFFAIR (1949) 2040

full.holidayaffair-1sh-2040

Original RKO One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Don Hartman holiday-themed romantic comedy, HOLIDAY AFFAIR (1949)—starring Robert Mitchum, Janet Leigh, and Wendell Corey. Released on Christmas Eve in 1949, this bright and engaging comedy has single-mom Leigh being wooed by two men over the Christmas holidays—the warm-hearted dreamer Mitchum and seriously dull Corey. Both 20-year-old Leigh and her young 8-year-old son Gordon Gebbert are innocent and charming. Robert Mitchum departed from his usual machismo in to make this seasonal romantic comedy. The film was such a flop that RKO backed out of it’s contract with director Don Hartman. However, HOLIDAY AFFAIR has become a popular Christmas movie over the years thanks to regular TV broadcasts during the holiday season. This original one sheet poster is folded and in very fine condition.
