MICKEY AND THE BEANSTALK (1947) 15748

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This item is not a film poster. It is an Original Capitol Records point-of-promotion counter standee for a 78 rpm record album. In the early
1950s Capitol Records produced some “Record Readers” for children. A book was included in the album and kids would “read along” with the
record. Several of these were done, including several very famous ones for Bozo the Clown. And, of course, some for The Disney Company. This was several years before Walt Disney started his own record label, Disneyland Records. This is a wonderful and very rare Goofy, Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse item. MICKEY AND THE BEANSTALK was produced as an element of the Disney feature length film FUN AND FANCY FREE (1947). This segment of the movie is a re-telling of the Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale. Condition is good to very good. Part of Donald’s cap has been chipped away and likewise the very end of Mickey’s nose. All of this is within easy range of professional restoration. There is some edgewear along the bottom of the standee, which measures 24 x 28.

This was the first and by far the most memorable full-length animated feature from Disney Studios. It tells a simple story of a charming princess saved from the evil deeds of her wicked stepmother by a group of seven adorable dwarfs. It astounded audiences when it was released in December 1937 and since has become an enduring family favorite. It won the Academy Award for Best Musical Score, and the next year Walt Disney was presented an Honorary Oscar to recognize the film “as a significant screen innovation which has charmed millions and pioneered a great new entertainment field.” Disney received one regular statuette and seven miniature statuettes. Original Walt Disney Productions Three Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Clyde Geronimi animated fairy tale, SLEEPING BEAUTY (1959) starring the voices of Mary Costa, Bill Shirley, and Eleanor Audley. This feature was in active production from 1951 until the end of 1958 and was the last Disney animated feature to have cels inked by hand. The beautiful art direction is inspired by European medieval paintings and architecture, and the elaborate background paintings took between seven and ten days to paint. SLEEPING BEAUTY was perhaps the first animated feature released in 70mm, in large part to present the music in stereo. Though much of the soundtrack in based on the Tchaikovsky ballet, George Bruns received an Academy Award nomination for Best Musical Score for his original songs. The poster is folded and not linen backed and is very fine plus condition with some signs of use. Some pinholes indicate that the poster was once theater-used. Colors are vivid. Three sheets are published generally on two panels which are then joined together to make one poster. This poster therefore is comprised of two separate panels. MovieArt can recommend a conservation studio if linen-backing is desired.

Original New York Graphic Society print (11.5×13.5) of scenes from the David Hand animation masterpiece for Walt Disney Productions, BAMBI (1942). BAMBI has played and continues to play a key role in shaping American attitudes about deer and woodland life. The film is the single most successful and enduring statement in American pop culture against hunting. The greatest emotional impact in the film is the death of Bambi’s mother, who is shot by hunters off screen. Children are generally overwhelmed with grief for the seemingly senseless killing of the mother and realize that Bambi is left a virtual orphan without his principal caregiver. Although the film did not recover its production expenses in its first run, subsequent releases made the film one of the most successful animation features of all time. This original print, entitled “Bambi meets his forest friends” is in very fine condition. Please note that this small print is not an actual film poster, but rather a New York Graphic Society print from the period.
